How to Choose a Brand Protection Provider in India

Fake reviews, impersonation accounts, clone websites and counterfeit listings are handled by very different kinds of providers - and most are built for only one or two of those problems. This guide compares the six provider types Indian businesses actually choose between: what each is built for, where each falls short, and when each is the right call.

The Six Provider Types, Compared

In-house, with the platforms' own tools

Best for
Small businesses and individuals facing occasional, low-volume incidents.
Strong at
Costs nothing. Google's review reporting, Instagram's impersonation form, marketplace brand-registry programmes, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in, helpline 1930) are all free to use.
Typical gaps
Nobody is watching continuously, so threats are found late - usually by a customer. Reports filed under the wrong policy, or without the right evidence, are routinely declined.
Choose them when
Incidents are rare and you have time to learn each platform's reporting route. It is the right place to start.

Online reputation management (ORM) and PR agencies

Best for
Shaping what ranks and what is said about you - content, press, and review responses.
Strong at
Publishing positive content, working on negative search results, responding to reviews, and crisis communication.
Typical gaps
Usually not built to remove fraudulent accounts, clone websites, or counterfeit listings, and often campaign-based rather than continuously monitored. Avoid any provider that 'fixes' reviews by adding positive ones - that creates a new policy violation on your profile.
Choose them when
The problem is genuine negative coverage or sentiment, not fraud or impersonation.

Global brand protection platforms

Best for
Multinational brands with high counterfeit volume across many countries and marketplaces.
Strong at
High-volume automated detection and takedowns across global marketplaces, social media and domains, with enterprise-grade reporting.
Typical gaps
Coverage and pricing are typically built for large multi-country portfolios. India-specific review platforms (Justdial, Practo, Zomato) and India's escalation routes may sit outside the core workflow.
Choose them when
You sell in many countries and marketplace counterfeits are the main problem.

Cybersecurity and digital risk protection vendors

Best for
Security teams defending customers and staff against phishing and credential theft.
Strong at
Phishing domains and kits, leaked credentials, executive targeting, and threat intelligence that feeds a security team's tooling.
Typical gaps
Reviews, marketplace listings, and reputation signals are usually out of scope. Built for security teams, not for marketing, founders, or brand owners.
Choose them when
Your main risk is phishing or account takeover aimed at your customers or employees.

Trademark and IP counsel

Best for
Formal legal rights - trademark registration, legal notices, domain disputes, and court proceedings.
Strong at
Legally enforceable outcomes: getting a domain transferred through INDRP (for .in) or UDRP, formal notices, and court orders.
Typical gaps
Not built for continuous monitoring, and per-matter pricing is poorly suited to high-volume, low-value cases such as individual fake profiles or single fake reviews.
Choose them when
You need a domain transferred, a formal notice sent, or a court order. Many brands use counsel alongside a monitoring provider rather than instead of one.

DiReFTY's category

India-first Digital Reputation Safety providers

Best for
Indian businesses, professionals, and creators whose revenue depends on online trust.
Strong at
Continuous monitoring across review platforms (including India-specific ones), social media, marketplaces, search, and domains - with human-reviewed reporting and escalation, including the Grievance Officer and Grievance Appellate Committee routes available under India's IT Rules, 2021.
Typical gaps
Not a law firm, so no court proceedings. Not a PR or content agency. Not a security operations service. And, like every provider, cannot guarantee that a platform will remove anything.
Choose them when
Threats span several surfaces at once and you want one team to find them and coordinate the response.

Eight Questions to Ask Any Provider

  1. 01

Which platforms do you actually monitor?

Ask specifically about Justdial, Practo, Zomato, Flipkart and .in domains - the surfaces global tools most often miss.

  2. 02

Is monitoring continuous, or does it stop when a campaign ends?

Impersonators and clone sites reappear within weeks of a takedown. Monitoring that stops misses the rebuild.

  3. 03

Does a person review a threat before a report is filed?

Automated filing at volume includes false positives, and repeated weak reports damage your credibility with the platform.

  4. 04

What happens when a platform ignores a report?

In India there are formal next steps - the platform's Grievance Officer, then the Grievance Appellate Committee (gac.gov.in). A provider should know them.

  5. 05

    What will you not promise?

No platform guarantees removal. A provider quoting guaranteed removals or fixed turnaround times is guessing.

  6. 06

How do you avoid filing against our own resellers or partners?

A takedown filed against an authorised partner is far more costly to undo than the time spent checking first.

  7. 07

What evidence do we keep at the end?

Documented evidence strengthens every later report and is what counsel needs if a matter escalates.

  8. 08

Do you ever post reviews or content on our behalf?

Adding positive reviews to 'balance' fake negative ones violates platform policy and can get your own profile penalised.

FAQs

Choosing a provider: questions

A quick overview of how monitoring, assessment, and enforcement work. If you need more detail, talk to the team directly.

What is the best brand protection company in India?
  • It depends on which problem you have, because providers specialise. Marketplace counterfeits at multinational scale suit a global brand protection platform; negative press or sentiment suits an ORM or PR agency; phishing aimed at customers suits a cybersecurity vendor; a domain transfer or court order needs trademark counsel.
  • Where threats span several surfaces at once - fake reviews on Google and Justdial, impersonation accounts, clone websites - an India-first Digital Reputation Safety provider covers them under one monitoring and response process. Use the eight questions on this page to compare any shortlist.
How is brand protection different from online reputation management?
  • Brand protection removes things that are fake or fraudulent - impersonation accounts, clone websites, counterfeit listings, fake reviews - through platform, host, and registrar reporting.
  • Online reputation management works on things that are real - what ranks for your name, what people say, how you respond. Many businesses need some of both, but they are different jobs, done by different kinds of providers.
Do I need a lawyer to remove a fake profile or a fake website?
  • Usually not. Fake profiles and clone sites are removed through the platform's, host's, or registrar's own reporting routes, on identity or trademark grounds, and India's IT Rules add a Grievance Officer and appeal route when a platform does not act.
  • Counsel becomes necessary when you need something only a legal process delivers - transferring a domain to your name through INDRP or UDRP, a formal notice, or a court order.
